The Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) has made substantial strides in enhancing its radiotherapy services, a critical component in cancer treatment. As of September 2026, the institute now boasts eight operational radiotherapy machines, a significant leap from the single machine that was functional in 1995.
This expansion is a direct response to the increasing burden of cancer patients seeking specialized care in Uganda. Ministry of Health officials toured the UCI’s radiotherapy unit recently, acknowledging the infrastructure improvements.
However, UCI management points out that the increased machine capacity has not entirely eliminated delays in treatment. The surge in patient numbers continues to strain resources, and the institute faces challenges related to limited human resources, which impacts the efficiency of delivering care.
While the growth in machinery is a positive development, the ongoing strain highlights the need for continued investment in both equipment and personnel to meet the escalating demand for cancer treatment services in the country.
