South Korean football captain Lee Gi-hyuk has issued a public apology for remarks made after his team secured a gold medal at the Asian Games. Following their 1-0 victory over hosts Japan, Lee controversially announced he would not be undertaking mandatory military service.
The 26-year-old, who was an overage player in the U-23 squad, expressed deep regret in a social media post for his “careless” and “gloating” comments. He specifically apologized to fans currently serving in the military and those who have supported the team.
In South Korea, most male citizens are required to complete 18 to 21 months of military service before turning 28. However, athletes who win gold at the Asian Games or earn Olympic medals are granted an exemption, requiring only a brief period of basic training.
This exemption has also been utilized by other notable athletes, including golfer Tom Kim, who won gold at the same event. Football star Son Heung-min previously benefited from this policy, undergoing only three weeks of service after winning the Asian Games in 2017.
Lee, who plays for Gangwon FC in South Korea’s K League, acknowledged that as an adult, he should have been more thoughtful. He stated his intention to continue reflecting on his actions and reiterated his sincere apologies to all supporters. “I deeply regret having spoken so carelessly, and I will continue to reflect on my actions,” he added.
