Seven women have been apprehended in Ghana for their involvement in creating and distributing decorative items fashioned from the nation’s currency. The suspects were reportedly selling ‘money bouquets’ and cakes adorned with Ghanaian banknotes in Accra.

The Bank of Ghana has declared this practice illegal, stating that it constitutes misuse and improper handling of the cedi. This enforcement action follows a tip-off and a subsequent police operation, marking one of the most significant crackdowns on currency misuse.

Earlier this year, the central bank issued a notice cautioning against activities that could “depreciate or impair the national currency.” The warning specifically mentioned decorating with currency, writing on notes, and ‘spraying’ money at events.

These money decorations, often given as gifts for celebrations like weddings and birthdays, have become increasingly popular in Ghana and other African nations in recent years. Officials emphasize that the Ghana cedi is legal tender and must be treated with respect.

The arrested individuals are currently under investigation and will face prosecution. Potential penalties include fines or imprisonment, as determined by the court. The Bank of Ghana has indicated that anyone facilitating or promoting such activities could also face legal consequences.

Authorities have reiterated their warnings against currency misuse, a concern echoed by central banks in countries like Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Botswana.
