Bestselling author and former politician Jeffrey Archer has passed away at the age of 86. His publisher, HarperCollins, announced that he died “suddenly and peacefully at home” on Monday, between writing sessions.
Archer was a prolific writer whose career spanned five decades, during which he sold over 300 million books worldwide. His most famous works include the “Clifton Chronicles” and “Kane and Abel” series, often set in his hometown of Wellington, Somerset.
Beyond his literary achievements, Archer had a notable political career. He served as a Conservative Member of Parliament for Louth from 1969 to 1974 and later as the Conservative Party’s deputy chairman. However, his political life was significantly impacted by a 2001 perjury conviction related to a 1987 libel case, which resulted in a four-year prison sentence. He was released in 2003 and remained a member of the House of Lords until his retirement in 2024.
Archer’s final book, “Adam and Eve,” is scheduled for release this week. His publisher described him as a “master storyteller” for whom his readers were paramount. He was recently seen signing books for fans at Leicester Square Theatre and had returned to his former school, Wellington School, to promote his latest novel.
Broadcaster Gyles Brandreth, who recently shared a stage with Archer, described him as “funny, engaging and self-deprecating – a great storyteller to the last.” He also noted that Archer became a “gentler person after prison.”
Friends and colleagues, including Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch and former chancellor Nadhim Zahawi, have paid tribute to Archer, remembering him as an “extraordinary human being” with a “gift for storytelling” matched by his “wit, warmth and boundless energy.”
Archer and his wife Mary, who celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year, had two sons and five grandchildren.
