NSSF's Record 22.53% Interest: A Boost for Savers, But Is It Sustainable?

The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) is celebrating a record-breaking interest credit of 22.53% for the financial year ending June 2026. This figure marks the highest rate in the fund’s history, offering a significant financial uplift for Ugandan workers planning for their retirement. Members are set to receive approximately Shs5.44 trillion in credited interest, nearly doubling the previous year’s payout.

This remarkable increase follows a steady upward trend in NSSF’s interest rates, which rose from 10 percent in the 2022/23 financial year to 11.5 percent in 2023/24, and then to 13.5 percent in 2024/25. However, the latest jump is substantially larger than these incremental gains, prompting an important financial inquiry: can this high return be replicated in the future?

While the impressive return is undoubtedly welcome news for savers, strengthening their account balances, it’s crucial not to set an expectation that future interest rates will consistently exceed this 22.53% mark. The sustainability of such an exceptional valuation gain is a key question for financial analysts and fund managers alike.

The NSSF’s long-term objective has been to achieve an average annual return of approximately 2 percent above the preceding decade’s average inflation rate. The actual interest credited, however, is directly tied to the cash the Fund generates within a specific financial year. Therefore, while the current excitement is understandable, a holistic view of retirement savings should extend beyond a single year’s performance.

This significant interest payout underscores the importance of consistent saving and the potential for substantial growth within the NSSF framework. It serves as a powerful incentive for members, reinforcing the value of their long-term investment in the fund.
