Daniel Kananura, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flagbearer for Kira Municipality in the January 2026 general elections, has presented his case to the High Court in Wakiso. He alleges that an overwhelming presence of military and security personnel on polling day directly contributed to his loss to the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) George Musisi.
Appearing before Justice George Okello, Kananura testified that the extensive security deployment, particularly in populous areas like Bweyogerere and Kireka, created an intimidating atmosphere. He claims this deterred some of his supporters from casting their ballots, as they were “very weak and couldn’t brave the military officers.”
Justice Okello raised concerns about the plausibility of Kananura’s claims, suggesting that proof of intimidation would require testimony from the affected voters themselves. The Electoral Commission’s representative, Patrick Wetaka, also questioned how Musisi’s supporters were able to vote in large numbers if the alleged intimidation was widespread.
Kananura remains adamant that electoral irregularities cost him the election and is seeking an annulment of Musisi’s victory, with the hope of a fresh poll where he is confident of securing 80% of the vote. Alternatively, he has requested a vote recount.
Further complicating the matter, Kananura also stated that declaration of results forms in his possession show different figures than those officially gazetted by the Electoral Commission. However, when pressed for specific vote counts, he was unable to provide them immediately and requested time to consult his records. Kananura’s legal team also indicated that some of his agents submitted unsigned forms or forms with incorrect agent names.
