New York Governor Kathy Hochul has issued a state disaster emergency as the number of measles cases in the state surpasses 100 this year. This declaration aims to bolster the ongoing fight against the highly contagious disease.

The emergency measures will allow for an increase in the number of healthcare professionals authorized to administer the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Paramedics, pharmacists, and midwives will now be able to provide the vaccine, alongside nurses who can now order testing in addition to doctors.

State health officials have been working with local departments to track and contain the outbreak. Dr. James McDonald, New York State Department of Health commissioner, stressed that the MMR vaccine is the best defense against measles and urged residents to verify their vaccination status.

This is the first such declaration by a US state in response to measles outbreaks since cases began to increase last year. Nationally, the US is experiencing its worst year for measles since 1991, with nearly 3,900 cases reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The surge has also impacted neighboring states, with Pennsylvania reporting over 1,000 cases and five deaths, all of whom were unvaccinated. Outbreaks have also been noted in Ohio, Texas, Utah, and South Carolina, with health experts linking these incidents to declining vaccination rates.

The emergency order is in effect until November 4th, signifying a critical public health response to a growing concern.
