The Mary Louise Simkins Memorial Golf Club, commonly known as Namulonge, is set to host its third annual Homecoming tournament on Uganda’s Independence Day. This event serves as a special reunion, inviting former students and members to celebrate the club’s journey and future.

Namulonge, a golf club with nearly seven decades of history, has established itself as a key training ground for golfers in the Kampala Metropolitan Area, particularly for those looking to refine their skills after their teenage years. It is often referred to as an “academy” for larger clubs like the Uganda Golf Club, Entebbe, and Serena Kigo.

The club has seen remarkable growth, with its membership increasing from 58 players five years ago to approximately 300 currently. Over 1000 golfers have honed their abilities on the greens located within the National Crops Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI).

This year’s Homecoming tournament is particularly significant due to the generous sponsorship from CFAO Mobility and Afrisafe Insurance. The sponsors are offering a brand-new Suzuki A-Cross and a Yamaha motorcycle as prizes for any golfer achieving a hole-in-one on designated par-3 holes (either No.2, No.4, No.11, or No.13).

“It is a tournament where we invite all the old boys and old girls of Namulonge to come and join us in a celebration of where the club has gone,” stated Herbert Kamuntu, the club chairman. “Independence rhymes with matching where the club has come from and where it is going.”

CFAO Mobility’s Commercial Manager, Howard Wodomal, highlighted their commitment to mobility as fostering partnerships and experiences, emphasizing the premium nature of the Suzuki A-Cross hybrid and the Yamaha motorcycle. Arnold Baguma, Afrisafe’s Head of Business Development, noted the personal connection behind their partnership and their role in managing risk.

An estimated 120 players are expected to participate. The Homecoming tournament also serves as a crucial fundraiser, with past proceeds contributing to equipment purchases. Future plans include expanding the course to 18 holes using an additional 40 acres of land provided by NaCRRI.
