Two Members of Parliament have brought to the attention of the House a disturbing wave of violence plaguing Kiruhura and Kazo districts. Hon. Genesio Tumuramye highlighted that within the past month, five people, including a child, were found murdered in their homes in Kitura County. He implored the Ministry of Internal Affairs and security agencies to thoroughly investigate these deaths and determine their cause.
Adding to the alarm, Hon. Dan Atwijukire reported an even more dire situation in Kazo County, where ten individuals were killed between August 17th and September 27th. Atwijukire detailed that the victims, predominantly women and children, met violent ends, with some killed by hammers and others through brutal methods like slaughtering and strangulation. He shared an instance where suspects confessed to killing an elderly woman for Shs1.5 million.
Despite arrests and confessions, the killings have persisted, leaving residents in a state of fear and distress. The MPs called for immediate government intervention, including high-level meetings in the affected areas to reassure the public and address the escalating insecurity. They also advocated for compensation for the families who have lost loved ones.
Responding to the concerns, the Second Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, extended the government’s condolences. He assured the MPs that the President has historically provided financial assistance to families affected by such tragedies and indicated that this practice would continue. However, Dr. Kiyonga also stressed the crucial role of community vigilance, stating that security forces alone cannot prevent every incident. He urged residents to collaborate with the police and, if necessary, the army to enhance security and bring an end to the violence.
Dr. Kiyonga pledged that the government would work closely with the affected communities to restore order and safety. The MPs’ appeal underscores the urgent need for comprehensive security measures and community engagement to combat the rising tide of violent crime in the region.
