Lira Regional Referral Hospital is actively preparing for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Uganda will co-host. As part of these efforts, a delegation from Lira Hospital, led by Senior Executive Consultant Dr. Andrew Odur, visited Hoima Regional Referral Hospital.

The primary objective of the visit was to exchange valuable experiences and best practices between the two facilities. This collaboration aims to strengthen service delivery at Lira Hospital, ensuring it is fully equipped to handle the medical demands of the continental tournament.

Lira City is set to host several AFCON matches at the under-construction Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium, anticipating a large influx of players and fans. The hospital, with a capacity of 400-456 beds and serving approximately three million people across the Lango sub-region, has been declared ready to manage medical emergencies during the games.

Lira Hospital boasts a significant number of specialists, including physicians, gynaecologists, paediatricians, and surgeons. It also operates a Regional Ambulance Dispatch Centre, coordinating 12 ambulances across 10 administrative units, and an oxygen plant capable of producing 120 cylinders daily. Dr. Odur expressed confidence in the hospital’s current capabilities but appealed for additional government support in deploying more ambulances to bolster emergency response.

He emphasized that the infrastructure and services developed for AFCON should be retained post-tournament to benefit the region’s healthcare services long-term. Uganda, alongside Kenya and Tanzania, will host AFCON 2027 from June to July, marking the tournament’s return to the CECAFA region after nearly five decades.
