A fierce blaze has caused significant destruction in Kayunga, obliterating over ten residential buildings, shops, and other commercial establishments. The inferno resulted in losses estimated to be in the millions of shillings, leaving many traders in despair.
Eyewitnesses and local residents suspect that faulty electrical wiring is to blame for the incident, highlighting a persistent issue with the power supply in the area. “The electricity has become a problem here. It keeps developing faults, and we suspect this could have contributed to the fire,” one resident commented.
In the chaotic moments, police, traders, and residents worked in tandem to salvage what property they could as the fire rapidly advanced. Some individuals attempting to loot were apprehended by authorities. To aid firefighting efforts, residents resorted to breaking open locked shops to allow better access for the emergency services.
Traders expressed profound distress over their losses, with many unable to save any inventory. “The property that has been lost is worth millions of shillings. Many people could not save anything because the fire spread so quickly,” a distraught trader shared.
Local leaders and residents have voiced concerns about the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited’s (UEDCL) response to reported electrical issues. They pointed out that trees often come into contact with power lines, creating a serious fire hazard that has been repeatedly ignored.
Sergeant Jude Oluka of the Nansana Fire and Rescue Unit acknowledged the efforts to contain the blaze but noted the rapid spread made saving all property impossible. He also issued a warning regarding substandard electrical work, attributing some fire risks to unqualified individuals performing wiring.
Furthermore, Sergeant Oluka urged motorists to be more considerate of emergency vehicles, explaining that delays in reaching incident scenes are sometimes caused by traffic congestion due to drivers not yielding.
