The Uganda National Teachers’ Union (Unatu) has publicly appealed to the government to prioritize the recruitment of additional teachers across the nation. The union highlights that the current teacher-student ratio is unsustainable, placing immense pressure on existing educators and negatively impacting the learning environment.
Unatu officials emphasized that a lack of sufficient teaching staff is a primary obstacle to delivering quality education. This shortage is exacerbated by a general scarcity of essential educational resources, further compromising the effectiveness of teaching and learning processes. The union argues that without addressing these fundamental issues, the goal of providing equitable and high-quality education for all Ugandan children remains out of reach.
The plea from Unatu underscores the critical need for government intervention to bolster the teaching workforce. This includes not only increasing the number of teachers but also ensuring that schools are adequately equipped with the necessary materials and infrastructure to support effective pedagogy. The union suggests that a concerted effort is required to overhaul the current system and make education a more central focus in national development planning.
Stakeholders in the education sector are hopeful that the government will heed these calls and take decisive action to rectify the teacher deficit and resource gaps. The long-term implications of understaffed and under-resourced schools could have profound effects on the nation’s human capital development and future economic prospects.
