The Baganda community in Boston, Massachusetts, recently came together to observe Buganda Day 2026. The event, organized by the Boston chapter of Ggwanga Mujje, aimed to preserve cultural heritage and strengthen connections among the Kabaka’s subjects residing in the United States.
Buganda Day is a significant annual occasion for the association, providing a platform to showcase Buganda’s rich traditions and culture. It also serves as a crucial opportunity to introduce the younger generation, raised in the diaspora, to their ancestral heritage.
A key highlight of this year’s celebration was a spirited quiz competition focused on the Luganda language, Buganda’s traditions, and cultural history. Dr. Ssebuwufu William Kamirante moderated the event, with Serena Nakazibwe of Nnyonyi Nakinsige taking home the prize in the youth category for her impressive knowledge.
Henry Matovu Ndawula, the Kabaka’s representative in New England, expressed his gratitude for the community’s consistent engagement and support for the Kingdom’s initiatives. He commended attendees for their contributions, according to their abilities.
In a message delivered to the gathering, Joseph Kawuki, the Minister for Local Governments, Kabaka’s Tours, and Buganda Affairs Abroad, congratulated the New England community on upholding their tradition of unity and cultural reflection. Kawuki emphasized the importance of avoiding divisive elements such as religion and politics.
He also encouraged support for a fundraising drive to establish a water-based hospital, intended to serve communities on the Ssese and Buvuma islands. Kawuki highlighted the Kabaka’s ongoing welfare initiatives, including the establishment of schools, health facilities, and clean water sources.
He urged Baganda living abroad to stay connected with the Kingdom’s progress through its official communication channels. The Boston celebrations successfully united the Baganda community, fostering discussions on heritage, unity, and development within the Buganda Kingdom.
