Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere has implored Ugandans to embrace and uphold the enduring legacy of the late Dr. Paul Kawanga Ssemwogerere, a former Democratic Party president. Speaking at the inauguration of a new school block named after the veteran politician at St. Jude Secondary School Katende in Mpigi District, the Archbishop highlighted Dr. Ssemwogerere’s unwavering commitment to democracy, dialogue, and peaceful political transitions.

The newly commissioned facility, which includes a library, e-books hall, main hall, and classrooms, stands as a testament to Dr. Ssemwogerere’s contributions. The Archbishop, alongside Dr. Ssemwogerere’s widow, Ms. Jemima Namatovu Ssemogerere, also blessed a new dormitory at the school.

Archbishop Ssemogerere emphasized that Dr. Ssemwogerere’s life offered critical lessons for contemporary Uganda, particularly his principled stance against violence during the country’s turbulent political history. He noted that in the aftermath of the 1980 general elections, Dr. Ssemwogerere prioritized peace talks over armed conflict, demonstrating a deep commitment to national stability.

The prelate also touched upon the importance of political opposition in a democratic society, aligning with recent discussions on the role of dissent. He stressed that constructive opposition is vital for a healthy democracy and expressed hope that its significance is duly recognized.

Reflecting on Dr. Ssemwogerere’s personal life, the Archbishop described him as a man of modesty and selflessness, whose true wealth lay in integrity and service rather than material possessions. This sentiment was echoed by other speakers, including MP Dr. Michael Phillip Lulume Bayiga and the school’s director, Oweek. Charles Bwenvu, who lauded Dr. Ssemwogerere’s principled approach to politics.

Family members expressed their gratitude for the honor, noting Dr. Ssemwogerere’s lifelong dedication to human rights and non-violence. The event concluded with the Archbishop urging the youth to focus on character development and responsible living, reminding them of their role as future leaders.
