On this World Teachers’ Day, the European Union (EU) and its member states, including Belgium, are reaffirming their dedication to supporting teachers in Uganda. Ambassador Hugues Chantry of Belgium emphasized the crucial role educators play in shaping future generations and acknowledged the increasing demands placed upon them.
This year’s theme, “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures,” commemorates the 1966 ILO/Unesco Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers. This landmark agreement underscores the international community’s commitment to ensuring teachers are well-equipped and supported.
While Uganda has shown a commendable increase in education financing, with a projected 24 percent rise in FY2026/2027, the sector’s allocation remains below international benchmarks. The EU and its member states are stepping in to complement government efforts through substantial investments in various educational programs and multilateral agencies like Unicef, ILO, and Unesco.
Belgium’s support spans from early childhood education to higher learning and research, including initiatives for technical and vocational training. These efforts aim to empower teachers and enhance the quality of education across the country.
The upcoming EU–Uganda Study & Research Fair 2026 further exemplifies this partnership, offering students and researchers opportunities for collaboration and showcasing scholarship programs. This event also marks fifty years of cooperation between Uganda and the European Union.
As a final note, Ambassador Chantry extended gratitude to all teachers across Uganda for their unwavering dedication, patience, resilience, and belief in their students’ potential. Their work is instrumental in shaping the future every single day.
