The Houthi movement, formally called Ansar Allah, is a Zaydi Shia revivalist group that has dramatically reshaped Yemen’s political and military landscape. Originating from the northern Saada province, the group’s roots trace back to the 1990s, initially focusing on religious revival and opposing perceived corruption and foreign influence.

Their influence grew significantly in the early 2000s, leading to several uprisings against the former Yemeni government under Ali Abdullah Saleh. The 2011 Arab Spring uprisings provided a pivotal moment, allowing the Houthis to expand their territory and power amidst the subsequent instability and civil war.

In 2014, the Houthis, allied with disgruntled elements of the Yemeni army loyal to Saleh, seized control of the capital, Sanaa. This move triggered a Saudi-led coalition intervention in 2015, aiming to restore the internationally recognized government of President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi. The conflict has since devolved into a devastating humanitarian crisis.

The Houthis are widely seen as receiving support from Iran, though both Tehran and the Houthis deny direct military backing, often describing it as political and ideological. This alignment has positioned them as a key player in the broader regional rivalry between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Their military capabilities, including ballistic missile and drone technology, have allowed them to launch attacks on Saudi Arabia and the UAE, significantly impacting regional security.

Understanding the Houthi movement is crucial for grasping the complexities of the Yemeni conflict and its wider implications for the Middle East. Their historical grievances, religious ideology, and strategic alliances continue to define their role in the ongoing struggle for Yemen’s future.
