Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has announced new electricity tariffs that will be in effect for the fourth quarter of 2026, spanning October through December. These rates, approved by the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA), aim to differentiate costs based on consumption levels.

For domestic consumers, a tiered structure is in place. The first 15 kilowatt-hours (kWh) consumed monthly will be charged at a lower rate of Shs250 per unit. Consumption between 16 and 80 kWh will cost Shs779.4 per kWh, while usage from 81 to 150 kWh will be priced at Shs412 per kWh. Households consuming over 150 kWh will revert to the Shs779.4 per kWh rate.

This structure is designed to benefit low-usage households while increasing costs for those with higher electricity demands. A lifeline tariff also remains for domestic consumers whose average monthly consumption over the preceding six months does not exceed 100kWh.

The new tariffs extend to various consumer categories, including commercial, industrial, and public services. Commercial consumers will see an average tariff of Shs562.1 per kWh, with peak and off-peak rates set at Shs666.5 and Shs429.7, respectively. Medium industrial manufacturers will pay an average of Shs363.8 per kWh, while large manufacturers will continue to benefit from lower rates, with Block 1 consumers at Shs308.1 and Block 2 at Shs290.6 per kWh.

Extra-large industrial manufacturers connected to high-voltage networks will have an average tariff of Shs207.7 per kWh. Public hospitals and street lighting will be charged an average of Shs360 per kWh.

UEDCL has clarified that these rates will apply to bills based on meter readings for postpaid customers between October and December. For prepaid customers, the new rates will be effective for electricity purchases made during the same period. Other charges, such as fixed monthly fees, demand charges, and penalties for power theft, will remain in effect.
