Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has unexpectedly called for an early general election to be held on November 29th. This decision follows recent parliamentary defeats on key legislation aimed at tackling Spain’s pressing housing crisis.

The move comes after two decree laws proposed by Sánchez’s minority government, designed to protect tenants, were rejected by parliament over the weekend. This legislative failure was exacerbated by escalating public discontent, fueled by the recent eviction of an 87-year-old woman from her home due to a significant rent increase.

This eviction, which sparked nationwide protests, highlighted the growing anger over housing affordability and tenant security. In a televised address, Sánchez stated his need for a “broader progressive majority” to overcome “resistance from the elites” and push through necessary reforms.

Beyond the housing crisis, Sánchez’s government has faced mounting challenges, including corruption allegations impacting his party, concerns over the cost of living, and immigration issues. Sánchez acknowledged these difficulties, admitting that “we have made mistakes and have not achieved everything we had set out to do.”

The current coalition government, a partnership between Sánchez’s Socialist party and the Sumar alliance, lacks a parliamentary majority. This instability has been a recurring theme since Sánchez became Prime Minister in June 2018, navigating power through agreements with smaller parties and nationalist groups. Opinion polls currently suggest a potential win for the conservative People’s Party, though they may require support from the far-right Vox party to form a government.

The opposition leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, welcomed the announcement, framing the election as a choice between “decline or change, lies or change, incompetence or change, division or change, corruption or change.”

The recent protests saw tens of thousands demonstrate in major cities, demanding stronger tenant protections. The government’s proposed decrees included measures such as suspending evictions for vulnerable tenants until 2030 and extending rental leases. However, these were met with opposition from the political right, who argued that such interventions could negatively impact the housing market.
