Authorities in Kawempe, Uganda, are probing the tragic death of a five-month-old baby girl whose body was discovered in a pit latrine. The infant, identified as Nandaula Magret, also known as Tyra Biyinzika, was allegedly wrapped in a polythene bag and hidden.
The incident is reported to have occurred on September 26 in Kanyogoga, Kawanda Central Zone, Wakiso District. However, police were only officially informed of the matter on the morning of October 5. Initial reports suggest the baby fell ill the week prior and died on September 26. Following the infant’s death, the mother allegedly placed the body in a ‘kaveera’ (plastic bag) and disposed of it in a pit latrine. She is said to have only disclosed the incident to her sister.
Upon receiving the tip, detectives from the Uganda Police Force visited the scene and successfully retrieved the infant’s body from the latrine. The body has been transported to the mortuary for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the precise cause of death.
In connection with the investigation, the parents of the child, George Ssendawula, 44, and Sarah Namutebi, 35, both residents of the area, have been taken into custody. Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala stated that the investigation is ongoing and further details will be released as they become available.
