A recent summit in Lira, Lango Sub-Region, brought together health officials, implementing partners, medical professionals, and community leaders to address the growing challenge of sickle cell disease. Participants emphasized the critical need for stronger regional health systems, proactive community education, and accessible diagnostic and treatment services.

Rohit Datar, Head of Business Development and Private Market at Qcil, highlighted that greater public awareness is crucial, especially in areas where limited knowledge about sickle cell disease can lead to delayed diagnoses and difficulties in accessing care. This engagement coincides with Qcil’s advancement in the local manufacturing of hydroxyurea, a key medication for managing sickle cell complications.

Datar stated that the local production of hydroxyurea is a significant step towards improving its availability and affordability, thereby reducing Uganda’s reliance on imported medicines. “This development will improve treatment access, reduce costs and strengthen the country’s pharmaceutical independence,” he noted.

Stakeholders at the summit agreed that effective treatment must be paired with robust public awareness campaigns. Early diagnosis allows for timely management and follow-up, empowering individuals and families to make informed health decisions. The summit concluded with the Uhuru Sickle Cell Run, an event aimed at raising awareness and challenging the stigma associated with the inherited condition.

Sickle cell disease affects the body’s red blood cells, impacting oxygen transport and requiring consistent medical care. The Ministry of Health plans to expand access to hydroxyurea, making treatment more accessible at lower-level health facilities. Lira Regional Referral Hospital currently provides chronic care to over 1,780 registered patients, though health officials suspect many in rural areas remain undiagnosed.

The summit and associated activities reinforced the message that tackling sickle cell disease requires a multi-faceted approach, including strong leadership, improved health systems, informed communities, and accessible treatment options, all while combating associated stigma. This collaborative effort is vital for enhancing prevention, care, and management of sickle cell disease across the Lango Sub-Region.
