Enhancing the quality of education in Uganda hinges significantly on investing in its teachers. This sentiment is strongly held by Enabel, Belgium’s governmental implementing agency, emphasizing that equipping educators with the right tools and opportunities is fundamental to building the nation’s future.

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is most effective when integrated into a school-wide learning culture. Such an environment allows teachers to share experiences, hone their skills, and consistently refine their pedagogical approaches.

Through initiatives like WeLearn and WeTeach, funded by the Kingdom of Belgium and the European Union, Enabel collaborates with the Ministry of Education and Sports to implement this developmental strategy. These programs have already reached over 4,000 teachers across several regions, focusing on critical areas such as competency-based teaching and the ethical use of artificial intelligence.

Beyond formal training, creating a supportive teaching environment is paramount. Strong school leadership and opportunities for peer-to-peer learning are vital components that bolster professional growth. Furthermore, the involvement of parents and local communities plays a significant role in establishing conditions where effective teaching can lead to improved learning outcomes for students.

Early results from these collaborations with the ministry and partners are promising, indicating positive shifts in teaching practices and student achievements. As we observe World Teachers’ Day, the message is clear: supporting teachers with the necessary resources, opportunities, and environment is essential for their success and, by extension, for the future of Uganda’s youth. Enabel remains committed to this shared vision.
