Districts of Ibanda and Kazo are set to receive a significant boost in police presence following a pledge by the Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba. This move comes as a direct response to a disturbing wave of killings that has gripped the two regions, prompting urgent action from security agencies.
Local leaders and residents have voiced deep concerns over the escalating violence, with reports indicating that at least 25 individuals have lost their lives in the past three months. During a recent visit to Ibanda, IGP Byakagaba assured officials that the police force would strengthen its operational capacity in the affected areas.
As part of the plan, each sub-county within Ibanda and Kazo will be allocated an additional six police officers. This strategic deployment aims to enhance security coverage and ensure a more rapid response to criminal activities. “We are going to increase the number of police officers so that each sub-county can have additional personnel to strengthen security and improve response to crime,” Byakagaba stated.
In Ibanda, specific murder cases have been reported in various wards and sub-counties, with factors such as drug abuse, theft, domestic disputes, and land conflicts being cited as contributing elements. Local authorities have previously noted that limited resources, including manpower and vehicles, have hampered effective police patrols.
IGP Byakagaba also emphasized the importance of community policing, urging residents to actively collaborate with law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities. “The fight against crime is not the responsibility of the police alone. The community has a very important role to play by providing information and working with security agencies,” he remarked.
Local leaders, including Ibanda Resident District Commissioner Godfrey Mbetegyereize and District Chairperson Happy Herbert Mayanja, have welcomed the intervention, expressing optimism that the increased personnel will strengthen security operations, particularly in remote areas. The deployment is expected to help restore confidence and prevent further loss of life.
