Ambassador Herbert Kiguli, who serves as Uganda’s Consul General in Mombasa, Kenya, has been arrested by the Inspectorate of Government (IG).
The arrest stems from allegations that Ambassador Kiguli is responsible for a significant financial loss to the government, reportedly amounting to Shs494,097,270.
The IG has stated that the 59-year-old diplomat was expected to be brought before the Anti-Corruption Court to face charges related to the alleged financial misconduct.
Kiguli heads Uganda’s consulate in Mombasa and has been actively involved in promoting the country’s economic, commercial, and tourism interests along the Kenyan coast. He has participated in numerous official functions in recent months.
This is not the first time Kiguli has faced scrutiny over financial matters. A report from the Inspectorate of Government in 2023 listed an outstanding sum of Shs461.897 million attributed to an individual identified as Herbert Kiguli. While the exact connection to the current charges is not specified in that document, it indicates a pattern of financial inquiry.
The legal proceedings will determine the veracity of the current allegations against Ambassador Kiguli.
