The Uganda Law Society (ULS) and Pearl Marina Estates have formalized a partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at making home ownership more attainable for legal professionals in Uganda. The agreement, announced on October 3, 2026, during the ULS Sports Fun Day at Pearl Marina in Garuga, includes a special 2.5% discount on condominiums for ULS members. This initiative is part of a broader effort by the ULS to bolster welfare programs for its members, recognizing the demanding nature of the legal profession.

Pearl Marina Estates, represented by Sales and Marketing Manager Sylvia Alal, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, highlighting its potential to generate professional opportunities and jobs alongside housing development. Alal emphasized the company’s commitment to operating within regulatory frameworks and fostering sustainable development through such partnerships.

ULS Vice-President Anthony Asiimwe underscored the importance of member welfare, citing the stress inherent in legal practice. He noted that the housing deal offers favorable terms, enabling lawyers to transition from renting to owning homes on prime land. The partnership also reignites calls for government intervention in the housing sector, particularly concerning affordability.

Asiimwe urged the government to consider reducing taxes on building materials and implementing policies that promote affordable housing, framing it as a fundamental need. ULS Treasurer Arthur Isiko added that more collaborations between developers and professional bodies are crucial for expanding access to decent housing, though he also pointed to challenges like land access and documentation in the sector.

The agreement extends beyond mere housing, encompassing networking and social initiatives, reinforcing the ULS’s commitment to members’ holistic well-being, encompassing professional, physical, social, and economic aspects. The ULS Sports Fun Day itself served as a platform to promote recreation and strengthen collegial bonds among lawyers.

This collaboration is a significant step in the ULS’s mission to broaden its focus on member welfare, offering tangible benefits that extend beyond their professional activities.
