Police have successfully apprehended Edrine Bwire, the main suspect in the brutal kidnapping and murder of three-year-old Evelyn Nabwire. The arrest concluded a challenging seven-day manhunt that spanned several areas, including the dense Busitema Forest.

Bwire was located at his grandmother’s home in Namahara Village, Namayingo District, where he was reportedly seeking food after days on the run. During his arrest, authorities recovered a panga and a knife, believed to be the murder weapons.

The investigation was spearheaded by the Police Flying Squad, Crime Intelligence Unit, and local officers, who utilized phone-tracking technology to locate Bwire. Despite Bwire’s attempts to evade capture by switching off his phone and constantly moving, the tracking data eventually led investigators to his hideout.

Nabwire was allegedly kidnapped on September 24, and her body was later discovered on the Busia-Bugiri Highway with severe injuries, including a slit open stomach and deep cuts. Investigators believe Bwire attempted to stage the scene to resemble a road accident.

During questioning at Busia Central Police Station, Bwire confessed to the crime. He claimed jealousy over his cousin’s father’s prosperity and a desire to inflict pain on the parents fueled his actions. He detailed how he lured Nabwire away from her friends and killed her with a panga, later hiding her body before dumping it on the road. He also admitted to demanding a ransom from the family, even after the child’s death.

Residents expressed outrage during a scene reconstruction, with some attempting to attack Bwire, requiring intervention from the heavy police presence. Bwire now faces charges of kidnapping and murder. The motive appears to stem from deep-seated family disputes and jealousy, contrasting sharply with the victim’s description as a well-behaved child by her nursery school teacher.
