The high-tech cassava processing plant operated by Dei Pharma Limited in Namasagali, Kamuli District, is on the verge of full-scale production following the completion of crucial electricity infrastructure works. The plant is designed to transform cassava into pharmaceutical-grade starch and industrial sugars, essential raw materials for vaccine and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
Energy Minister Monica Musenero confirmed that the facility has entered its commissioning stage after she directed the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) to resolve power challenges. UEDCL installed a dedicated transformer at the Kamuli substation to serve the Namasagali line, isolating the plant from potential grid issues and enhancing power reliability.
This intervention is a significant breakthrough for Dei Pharma proprietor Dr. Mathias Magoola, who has sought adequate electricity supply for months. Previously, the plant relied on diesel generators due to insufficient grid power. The new power infrastructure ensures stable and sufficient electricity, allowing the plant to operate at full capacity.
Dr. Magoola highlighted that the consistent power supply is vital for the plant’s output, which will in turn support Dei Pharma’s planned pharmaceutical and vaccine manufacturing operations in Matugga, Wakiso District. He also anticipates that the increased processing capacity will significantly boost demand for cassava, encouraging farmers in the Busoga Sub-region to expand cultivation and leading to higher crop prices.
The plant aims to produce over 100 cassava-derived products and explore value addition for other crops. Full operations are expected to create substantial direct and indirect employment opportunities.
Local leaders, including Namasagali Sub-county LC3 chairperson Mr. Richard Mutuuya, have welcomed the power upgrade, noting that unreliable electricity had previously impacted residents and businesses. The development is seen as a catalyst for increased economic activity in the area.
