Germany marks October 3rd as the Day of German Unity, a significant occasion celebrating the nation’s reunification in 1990 after 41 years of division. This historic event was largely made possible by the bravery of East Germans who, in 1989, courageously protested for freedom and democracy, risking their safety and lives.
For those who lived in West Berlin, like the author, a united Germany was once an unthinkable prospect. The day is therefore observed with deep gratitude for the determination of the East German populace and the support from Western Allies during the years of separation. Following World War II, Germany was divided into zones controlled by Allied powers, eventually leading to the formation of two states: the democratic Federal Republic of Germany in the West and the socialist German Democratic Republic (GDR) in the East.
The GDR era was marked by a heavily guarded border and the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, which prevented citizens from leaving. Many lived in a surveillance state, with limited freedoms. However, by the late 1980s, growing discontent fueled peaceful demonstrations that culminated in the fall of the Berlin Wall, paving the way for reunification.
This reunification was not a foregone conclusion, influenced by factors such as the reform policies of Mikhail Gorbachev and the support of neighboring countries. While the fall of the Iron Curtain brought immense hope for peace, freedom, and democracy, the current global landscape presents new challenges. Conflicts are prevalent, and traditional alliances are being re-evaluated.
Despite these complex global shifts, Germany remains committed to its core values. Federal President Steinmeier emphasizes that the determination to overcome challenges is greater than the challenges themselves. This is achieved through steadfast convictions, investment in international cooperation, and the deepening of partnerships based on fairness and trust.
Germany has been a steadfast partner to Uganda for many years, with diplomatic relations set to reach 65 years next year. This collaboration has yielded success in vital sectors like water, energy, and agriculture. As the new German Ambassador, the commitment is to foster forward-looking cooperation for the mutual benefit of both nations.
