Midfielder Bruno Fernandes has strongly defended Cristiano Ronaldo’s status as Portugal’s greatest footballing figure, even as the star’s international future remains uncertain. Ronaldo departed the national squad this week after learning he would not start in a Nations League match against Denmark.
Fernandes addressed the situation during a press conference, stating, “Regardless of what happens, Cristiano Ronaldo will never cease to be the greatest symbol of our national team, of our football, and of the country.” He highlighted Ronaldo’s significant contributions both within Portugal and globally.
The Manchester United player stressed that Ronaldo holds a “reserved place not only among the best of all time, but also in the hearts of all Portuguese people.” Fernandes urged against division, stating, “There are no divisions in the national team. It is one and will remain so, despite any noise that may come from outside.”
He further appealed for national unity, asking, “What I ask is that the country does not divide itself, does not make choices, that it respects all sides. Cris is and will be the biggest icon of our national team, he deserves everyone’s respect.”
Ronaldo, who holds Portugal’s records for goals (146) and appearances (234), was instrumental in their Euro 2016 and Nations League triumphs. While his current role is being reassessed under new coach Roberto Martinez, his profound impact on Portuguese football is undeniable.
Coach Jesus, who previously managed Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, acknowledged Ronaldo as a “symbol of Portugal” and indicated he would address the matter further after upcoming matches. Portugal currently leads their Nations League group after securing victories against Wales and Norway.
