With the arrival of the much-anticipated rainy season, Ugandan farmers are actively seeking the best inputs for their soil and crops. Experts are highlighting the significant benefits of using composted organic manure to maintain both soil and plant health.
While any manure that contributes to soil and plant nutrition is valuable, farmers need to consider the impact of heavy rains. These downpours can quickly wash away essential soil nutrients, diminishing the effectiveness of traditional fertilizers.
Mr. Joseph Kato Lutwama, a seasoned farmer trainer and coffee farmer from Luweero District, emphasizes that composted organic manure offers a distinct advantage. Its composition helps to bind the soil particles together, making it more resistant to erosion during intense rainfall.
This binding property ensures that the nutrients remain in the soil, available for plant uptake, even during the wettest periods. By choosing composted organic manure, farmers can safeguard their soil fertility and improve crop yields, ensuring a more robust harvest throughout the season.
This method offers a sustainable and effective way to manage soil health and optimize agricultural productivity in the face of challenging weather conditions.
