Hundreds of Catholic faithful gathered at the St. Ignatius University grounds in Kabale Municipality on Saturday, October 3, 2026, to witness the episcopal ordination and installation of the Rt. Rev. Bonaventure Bosco Gubazire. He now assumes leadership of the Kabale Diocese, which covers the six districts of the Kigezi sub-region.

Bishop Gubazire succeeds the Rt. Rev. Callist Rubaramira, who has retired after many years of service. The solemn ceremony was led by the outgoing bishop and graced by the Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda, Most Rev. Tomasz Grysa, and other bishops from Uganda.

In his sermon, Bishop Rubaramira advised his successor to serve with humility, selflessness, and patience, emulating Jesus Christ. He urged Bishop Gubazire to always remember the poor and needy and to foster unity for the development of the diocese. He also called for strong support from the diocesan flock for the new bishop.

Delivering his first address as bishop, Rt. Rev. Gubazire expressed deep gratitude to Pope Francis for the appointment and to all who supported him. He acknowledged the responsibility ahead and placed his trust in God’s guidance.

President Yoweri Museveni, in a message delivered by the Minister of Finance, Planning, and Economic Development, Mr. Henry Musasizi, congratulated Bishop Gubazire and highlighted the Catholic Church’s vital role in Uganda’s social and economic progress. The President urged the Church to promote wealth creation and economic projects, particularly to address youth unemployment.

Government officials also raised concerns about regional health issues. The Minister of Health, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, noted the high HIV/AIDS prevalence in South Western Uganda and appealed for religious leaders’ help in combating it. The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, delivered a financial contribution and donated heifers to both bishops.

The event saw numerous dignitaries in attendance, including the Chief Justice and several government ministers, underscoring the significance of the occasion.
