Authorities in Uganda have reported that a significant number of commuter taxis, totaling 408, have failed mandatory vehicle inspections as part of ‘Operation Ganyegenya’. These vehicles were impounded in August from the Kampala Metropolitan Area due to being in dangerous mechanical condition (DMC).

The joint operation, conducted by the Ministry of Works and Transport and the Traffic Police, specifically targets public service vehicles operating with safety concerns. Since the operation’s launch on August 24, a total of 477 taxis have been inspected.

Out of the 408 taxis that failed, only 69 have undergone repairs and successfully passed the government’s automated inspection facilities. The remaining vehicles are still undergoing repairs in various garages. Registration plates have been removed from the impounded taxis and will only be returned once the vehicles are certified as roadworthy, allowing them to legally operate again.

‘Operation Ganyegenya’ is slated to continue for 100 days, aiming to significantly improve the safety of public transport vehicles on the roads within the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area and along major highways.
