President Yoweri Museveni has ordered the Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, to accelerate the establishment of new administrative units in Tororo District. This directive comes in response to significant population growth and persistent issues with service delivery and land conflicts.

The President’s instructions were issued following discussions at an NRM Parliamentary Caucus meeting where Tororo’s legislative representatives voiced their concerns. George Oketcho, MP for West Budama County South, specifically appealed for presidential intervention to resolve the administrative logjam.

Oketcho highlighted that the district’s rapid population increase has strained public infrastructure, making it difficult for residents to access essential services like healthcare and education. He noted that some residents travel up to 25 kilometers for medical care, only to find basic diagnostic equipment like X-ray machines unavailable.

Inadequate educational facilities were also a major concern, with a shortage of schools contributing to lower academic performance. Oketcho urged the Ministry of Local Government to present a formal proposal to Parliament for the creation of new lower administrative units and city status for Tororo.

The planned administrative restructuring, which includes new counties like Mulanda, Kisoko, and Mukuju, along with Tororo City, is anticipated to bring governance closer to the people. This is expected to alleviate the pressure on existing facilities and resolve long-standing administrative challenges in the region.

The NRM Parliamentary Caucus meeting served as a platform for ruling party lawmakers to discuss national priorities and local issues before upcoming legislative sessions.
