Residents of Kiyindi Town Council in Buikwe District are facing significant challenges in accessing essential medical services. With a population exceeding 21,000, the lack of a public health center forces many to travel approximately seven kilometers to the nearest facility, Makindu Health Centre, located in a different sub-county.

This distance, coupled with the associated transport costs, places a substantial financial burden on families. For many, the expense of reaching a health facility is prohibitive, leading to delayed treatment or resorting to self-medication, particularly for common ailments like waterborne diseases, malaria, and flu. The proximity to a water body and dusty roads is cited as a factor contributing to frequent illnesses, especially among children.

Local leaders express deep concern over the growing population, largely driven by the fishing community, which is overwhelming the limited private healthcare options. The economic hardship and high unemployment at the Kiyindi landing site have exacerbated these issues, reportedly contributing to an increase in commercial sex work and the subsequent spread of diseases like STIs and HIV.

A recent reproductive health camp organized by the Centre for Health, Human Rights and Development (CEHURD) highlighted these pressing needs, offering services such as free HIV testing, family planning, and STI screening. While these outreach programs provide temporary relief, they underscore the critical need for a permanent, accessible government health facility.

Leaders are also concerned about the low male participation in health services, which they believe negatively impacts family health outcomes. Addressing these multifaceted health challenges requires immediate government intervention to establish a fully-fledged public health center in Kiyindi.
