Uganda is experiencing significant inflationary pressures driven by a sharp increase in diesel prices. The latest figures from the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (Ubos) show diesel inflation reaching 42.5 percent in the year ending September 2026, a notable jump from the previous month. This surge is having a widespread ripple effect across the economy, most acutely felt in the prices of food crops.
Experts emphasize that diesel is a fundamental input for Uganda’s productive sectors. It powers essential machinery in agriculture, including tractors and irrigation pumps, as well as generators and heavy equipment used in manufacturing and infrastructure. Furthermore, the vehicles that transport goods from farms and factories to markets rely heavily on diesel.
The increased cost of fuel directly translates into higher operational expenses for businesses. This includes the cost of transportation for both raw materials and finished products, as well as the energy required for production processes. Consequently, consumers are increasingly likely to face higher prices for a wide range of goods and services, as businesses pass on their increased costs.
This trend is exacerbated by other economic factors, such as the weakening of the Ugandan shilling against the dollar. The currency’s depreciation further inflates the cost of imported goods, including fuel. The combined effect of rising fuel prices and a weaker shilling is creating a challenging economic environment for many Ugandans.
