Uganda is set to modernize its labor administration with the upcoming launch of the Labour Administration Management Information System (LAMIS). This digital platform is designed to consolidate labor reporting and administration, moving away from fragmented manual processes.
The Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development has been training selected Labour Officers who will then cascade this training to their colleagues nationwide. This critical step ensures that personnel across the country are equipped to utilize the new system effectively.
LAMIS promises to significantly enhance the collection, reporting, and monitoring of labor information. Data from districts and local governments will be integrated, providing the Ministry with more accurate and timely insights for policy and decision-making. This improved data flow is also expected to facilitate better employer reporting and labor inspection tracking.
As described by Apollo Onzoma, Assistant Commissioner for Industrial Relations, the system’s core aim is to strengthen administrative data generation and harmonize reporting. This will lead to more useful and timely labor information.
The development of LAMIS is part of a broader reform of labor governance, initiated in March 2024 with support from Enabel. The system’s developer, Centric Solutions, is incorporating feedback from the ongoing training before its official rollout. A maintenance period of 12 months will support the system post-launch.
While an official launch date is yet to be confirmed, International Labour Day on May 1, 2027, has been proposed as a target. The introduction of LAMIS marks a significant step towards modernizing Uganda’s labor sector management.
