Authorities in Kanungu District have taken decisive action against illegal gold mining, arresting six suspects involved in unauthorized extraction along the Kibale and Ntungwa river streams in Nyamirama Sub-county. The enforcement operation, conducted on Thursday, October 1st, was a joint effort between territorial police and officials from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development.
According to Kigezi regional police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime, the suspects were found to be operating without the necessary permits, in violation of Uganda’s Mining and Minerals Act. The illegal activities have reportedly led to significant environmental damage along the waterways.
This crackdown follows specific directives issued by the Minister of State for Minerals, Phionah Nyamutoro, on September 7, 2026, aimed at curbing unregulated artisanal mining across the Kigezi sub-region. Police have issued a stern warning to anyone involved in unlicensed mineral extraction, urging them to cease operations immediately and pursue legal licensing procedures.
Kanungu Resident District Commissioner Ambrose Amanyire Mwesigye emphasized the security implications of these illicit operations, stating that they pose a threat to the district. He urged community members to exercise patience and adhere to government regulations while restrictions on mining remain in place.
The Police Minerals Protection Unit, along with other security agencies, will continue to patrol mineral-rich areas to prevent further environmental destruction and ensure compliance with mining laws. The six arrested individuals are currently in police custody as investigations progress.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development has intensified its nationwide enforcement to address issues such as environmental damage, revenue loss, and security risks associated with unlicensed mining. Strict adherence to licensing, environmental compliance, and safety guidelines is mandated under the updated Mining and Minerals Act.
