Seoul Threatens Action Over Ukraine's POW Revelation

South Korea has issued a stern warning to Ukraine, threatening unspecified "further action" if Kyiv does not issue a public apology. A diplomatic rift has emerged between South Korea and Ukraine following President Volodymyr Zelensky’s revelation at the UN General Assembly regarding the transfer of two North Korean prisoners of war to South Korea. The disclosure has significantly angered Seoul, which maintains that the arrangement was intended to be kept secret.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has publicly stated that Ukraine’s actions impact the “dignity of the Korean people and the nation.” His office claims that Kyiv itself requested the information be kept confidential, citing concerns for the prisoners’ families and a desire to avoid criticism over potentially foregoing a prisoner exchange opportunity with North Korea.

However, Zelensky’s office has refuted this, asserting no such agreement for confidentiality existed, further escalating the tension. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the situation as a “diplomatic misunderstanding” and indicated that Kyiv is actively working towards a resolution, emphasizing South Korea’s importance as a partner.

Despite these efforts, President Lee has rejected the “misunderstanding” characterization. He accused Ukraine of attempting to “bring war on the Korean Peninsula” by failing to acknowledge the agreed-upon confidentiality and instead alluding to potential conflict. This public dispute has also led to domestic criticism of President Lee, with opposition parties accusing him of attempting to placate Pyongyang.

The two North Korean soldiers, who had expressed a desire to relocate to South Korea, were among those supporting Russia in the Ukraine conflict. South Korea, while sympathetic to Ukraine, has maintained a policy of not supplying lethal weapons to active war zones.
