Rukunyu District Hospital has reported a concerning rise in mental health issues, with over 200 cases documented since the beginning of the year. This influx places a considerable strain on the facility, which is already contending with a scarcity of mental health specialists and the absence of a dedicated psychiatric unit.

Dr. Ivan Mujuni, the Medical Superintendent, identified several contributing factors behind the growing number of cases. These include rampant alcohol and drug abuse, high levels of stress, inadequate parenting, the impact of corporal punishment, and predisposing genetic factors.

The current situation means that mental health patients are being treated by only three assistant nursing officers. Compounding the problem, they are housed in general wards due to the lack of a specialized psychiatric unit, highlighting the critical need for improved infrastructure and personnel.

Despite these immense challenges, Dr. Mujuni observed a positive trend: more individuals are now seeking professional medical help at the hospital. This represents a shift from the past, where traditional healers were often the first point of contact for mental health concerns.

Dr. Mujuni strongly advised the public against excessive alcohol and drug consumption. He emphasized the importance of seeking medical attention promptly, noting that early screening, counseling, and treatment can significantly aid in preventing or effectively managing many mental health conditions. He also confirmed that essential psychiatric medications are readily available at the hospital.
