The National Drug Authority (NDA) has significantly ramped up its efforts to secure Uganda’s borders, particularly after a substantial seizure of illegal animal vaccines and veterinary medicines valued at approximately Shs100 million. This operation, which focused on illicit drug trade networks, targeted both Western Uganda and eastern border regions over a two-week period.

During these enforcement measures, a significant haul was made at the Busia border crossing, where officials intercepted 92 vials of Lumpivax vaccines, crucial for controlling Lumpy Skin Disease in cattle, along with their diluents. This interception highlights the ongoing challenge of counterfeit and unregistered pharmaceuticals entering the country.

In parallel operations across districts such as Kiryandongo, Buliisa, Kagadi, Kibaale, and Kyankwanzi in Western Uganda, the NDA shut down 79 drug outlets found operating without the necessary licenses. A total of 210 boxes of assorted pharmaceutical products were confiscated during these sweeps.

Abiaz Rwamwiri, spokesperson for the NDA, noted that public transport is increasingly being used to smuggle illicit medicines. In response, the authority is enhancing surveillance and intelligence gathering at border crossings. He urged public transport operators to implement stricter policies for parcel documentation to prevent their vehicles from being used for illegal trade.

While no arrests were made at the Busia border as no one claimed the seized vaccines, the NDA is urging individuals seeking to recover confiscated items to comply with licensing and regulatory requirements. The authority reiterates its commitment to safeguarding public and animal health by ensuring all medicines and healthcare commodities meet stringent standards. The public is advised to purchase medicines only from licensed pharmacies and report any suspicious activities to the NDA.
