The National Drug Authority (NDA) has taken swift action to remove an energy drink from the Ugandan market, citing serious safety concerns. The product, marketed as ‘Boisson Energetique Tres Puissante,’ has been flagged for containing sildenafil, the primary ingredient in the erectile dysfunction medication Viagra.
NDA spokesperson, Abiaz Rwamwiri, revealed that the authority recently intercepted eight boxes of the illicit beverage. He emphasized that sildenafil is a prescription-only drug, highly regulated due to its potent effects and potential health risks when consumed without medical supervision. The energy drink is believed to be illegally imported into the country, possibly from Burundi.
This ban follows a pattern of similar incidents, including a recent case in Zambia where an energy drink containing sildenafil caused a consumer to suffer a six-hour erection. The NDA is actively working to prevent the circulation of unapproved, counterfeit, and adulterated medicinal products within Uganda.
Consumers are strongly advised to avoid this energy drink and report any sightings to the National Drug Authority. The authority is committed to safeguarding public health by ensuring that all medicinal products on the market are safe, effective, and of good quality.
