The passing of Moses Matovu, a co-founder and the long-standing leader of the renowned Afrigo Band, has prompted veteran Ugandan playwright, actor, and director John Segawa to suggest the group consider retirement. Matovu, who died at 77, was instrumental in shaping the band’s sound and presence for over fifty years.
Segawa articulated his view that Matovu was more than just a performer; he was the heart and soul of Afrigo Band. “He is the face of the band. He is the disciplinarian, the director. He’s everything. I think it’s time for it to end,” Segawa stated in a recent interview with a local YouTuber.
According to Segawa, Matovu’s influence extended to maintaining the band’s cohesion and direction, suggesting that his absence creates a void that may be impossible to fill. He drew parallels with other musical ensembles that faltered after the departure of their central figures, expressing doubt about Afrigo’s ability to retain its unique identity and operational strength without Matovu at the helm.
“I don’t think they will survive, but let’s pray for them to keep it together,” Segawa added, acknowledging the possibility of resilience but emphasizing the immense challenge ahead.
Segawa’s sentiments have ignited discussions within the Ugandan music community. While some echo his sentiment, believing Matovu was intrinsically linked to Afrigo’s legacy, others contend that the band’s seasoned musicians possess the talent to carry on and honor his memory through continued performances.
Despite these external opinions, Afrigo Band management has affirmed its commitment to continuing its musical journey. They have indicated that existing performance commitments will be honored, signaling their intent to persevere in the wake of their profound loss.
