A terrifying home invasion has brought to light the escalating danger faced by cryptocurrency investors. Masked assailants violently assaulted a businessman, referred to as ‘James’ by the BBC, in his own home, inflicting injuries with hammers. The attack intensified when the intruders threatened his wife, who was seven months pregnant, with extreme violence, including threats against their unborn child, unless he transferred a substantial amount of cryptocurrency.

The ordeal, which lasted approximately 45 minutes, saw James being beaten while his wife was held down and suffocated with a pillow. The criminals, seemingly receiving instructions via a video call from an unseen individual, demanded James unlock his phone and reveal his crypto holdings. When a wallet with significant funds was identified, the threats against his wife and baby escalated dramatically.

Following the coercive transfer of hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of cryptocurrency and the theft of luxury watches, the attackers fled. This incident is part of a growing trend known as ‘wrench attacks,’ where criminals resort to physical violence to extort digital assets. Experts note that while most crypto theft occurs online, these violent robberies are increasing globally.

Crimestoppers is offering a £10,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension of the individuals involved, described as young men, and the driver of the getaway car. The victim, who has lost his entire crypto savings, hopes his harrowing experience will serve as a stark warning about the real-world risks associated with cryptocurrency investment. Despite the trauma, his wife and baby survived the ordeal and were born healthy. The police are actively investigating the case.
