Relations between Uganda and Turkey are currently navigating a complex phase, marked by a recent suspension of military cooperation by the Ugandan army. Despite these military ties being put on hold, officials from Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintain that the overall bilateral relationship remains cordial and is being managed through diplomatic channels.

“Yes, we have some issues which need to be addressed, but they will be addressed diplomatically,” stated Mr. Vincent Bagiire, the Permanent Secretary of the Foreign Affairs ministry, in a recent interview. This statement comes amidst public attention drawn to the situation of Mr. Fred Lumbuye, a government critic residing in Turkey. Supporters of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) had previously marched to the Turkish Embassy in Kampala, demanding Lumbuye’s handover.

The suspension of military cooperation, while significant, does not appear to have derailed ongoing efforts to strengthen other areas of collaboration. Reports indicate that both nations are finalizing agreements aimed at facilitating easier and fairer trade, particularly in the coffee sector. This move aligns with Uganda’s broader strategy to expand its export markets and establish direct trading relationships.

The situation involving Mr. Lumbuye has highlighted the sensitive nature of political discourse and its potential impact on international relations. Leaders from the National Unity Platform (NUP) party have confirmed seeing Mr. Lumbuye after a period of being out of communication, adding another layer to the unfolding narrative.

While the exact details and implications of the suspended military cooperation are still unfolding, the Ugandan government emphasizes its commitment to resolving any outstanding issues through peaceful and diplomatic means, ensuring that the broader friendly ties between the two countries are preserved.
