The transition to Uganda’s new competence-based curriculum in high schools has been a transformative, albeit challenging, experience for students like myself. As a Senior Six candidate, I have been part of the inaugural cohort, navigating a system designed to foster practical skills alongside academic knowledge. This journey has been less about rote memorization and more about developing resilience, adaptability, and a pioneering spirit.
The curriculum’s emphasis on acquiring knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes (KUSVA) aims to prepare us for diverse pathways, including further education, entrepreneurship, and employment. However, the implementation has not been without its hurdles. Reports from various sources indicate that some schools are struggling to fully embrace the new teaching and assessment methods, with a few even reverting to older approaches. This has created a complex learning environment where students are expected to adapt to a new system while educators grapple with mastering its intricacies.
Despite these challenges, our generation has learned to persevere and innovate. We are not just students; we are pioneers charting a new course for education in Uganda. The experiences under this new curriculum have shaped us, equipping us with the ability to face the unknown and to find solutions. As history is written, it should acknowledge our role in this significant educational shift, a testament to our capacity to adapt and lead.
This experience underscores the importance of continuous support and clear guidance for both students and educators during curriculum reforms. The path has been demanding, but it has also forged a generation ready to embrace future challenges.
