Uganda Hosts Inaugural African Dragon Boat Race, Fostering China-Africa Ties

Uganda has taken a significant step in international sports diplomacy by hosting the inaugural African Dragon Boat Racing competition on Lake Victoria. The event, which brought together teams from Uganda, Egypt, Kenya, and South Africa, along with guests from Singapore and Hong Kong, was celebrated as a milestone in fostering connections between Africa and China.
Alhaji Faruk Kirunda, Special Presidential Assistant on Press and Mobilisation, emphasized the role of sports in deepening relationships. “We celebrate 70 years when Africa is enjoying good relations with China, and that is something that we must uphold,” he stated during the opening ceremony. He highlighted that such events serve as crucial avenues for collaboration, tourism promotion, and investment opportunities.
The competition, organized by the African Dragon Boat Federation (ADBF), is a three-day affair aimed at promoting unity and showcasing African sporting talent. Ehab Gouda, President of ADBF, expressed gratitude to Uganda for hosting and suggested the country could become a future hub for dragon boat activities on the continent. The federation sees the sport as a powerful tool for promoting international friendship and tourism.
Uganda views the event as a significant boost for its tourism sector, attracting international visitors who can experience the country’s natural beauty. The government has pledged its support for the development of dragon boat racing in Uganda. Participants from various national teams shared their enthusiasm, with many expressing appreciation for the warm reception and the opportunity to celebrate China-Africa friendship through sport.
The competition also underscores the inclusive nature of dragon boat racing, which provides opportunities for individuals of all abilities to participate. This inaugural event has not only celebrated athletic prowess but also reinforced diplomatic and cultural bonds, with hopes of expanding participation and further developing the sport across Africa.
