Governor Bill Lee of Tennessee announced on Thursday the halt of all scheduled executions in the state for the rest of 2026. This decision comes after a deeply troubling incident where prison officials were unable to execute Christa Pike, who was on death row. Attempts to administer lethal injections on Wednesday evening reportedly failed, leaving Pike alive and requiring medical attention.
During a press conference, Governor Lee expressed his profound disappointment with the outcome, labeling the botched execution as a “most serious responsibility” for the state. He has initiated an independent review to investigate the circumstances surrounding the failed attempt, stating that the process will be thorough and aimed at answering the public’s questions.
Pike, now 50, was convicted in 1996 for the brutal murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. The crime occurred when Pike was just 18, alongside her then-boyfriend. Pike was slated to be the first woman executed in Tennessee in over two centuries.
Court filings by Pike’s legal team indicated she required “life-saving measures” following the failed execution. The Tennessee Department of Correction defended its actions, asserting that all established protocols were followed. Despite administering two doses of pentobarbital as per protocol when the first attempt is unsuccessful, Pike remained alive.
This marks the second instance in 2026 where Tennessee has encountered difficulties executing a prisoner. In May, the execution of Tony Carruthers was postponed due to an inability to establish an IV line for the lethal drug injection.
The incident has sparked debate, with some officials, like Senator Marsha Blackburn, suggesting a return to the electric chair. However, her political opponent, Jerri Green, called for a moratorium on all future executions, criticizing the idea of reviving more severe forms of capital punishment.
