Namanve Industrial Park, a cornerstone of Uganda’s industrial growth, is reportedly suffering from a severe lack of essential public sanitation facilities. Despite being a hub for numerous factories and a daily influx of workers, the area lacks adequate public toilets, presenting a growing health and dignity concern.
Sources indicate that the absence of proper facilities forces many individuals, including workers and truck drivers, to resort to desperate and unhygienic measures. Some are compelled to relieve themselves in open, undesignated areas, while others resort to using polythene bags, contributing to environmental pollution and posing public health risks.
The industrial park, established on land previously designated as a forest, was degazetted in 1991 to foster industrialization. While it has since attracted significant investment and is a hive of daily activity with raw material trucks and streams of workers, its basic infrastructure appears to be lagging behind its economic development.
This oversight in providing fundamental amenities like public restrooms not only impacts the well-being of the workforce but also the overall image and environmental health of this vital economic zone. The situation highlights a critical gap in urban planning and service provision for burgeoning industrial areas in Uganda.
