His Majesty King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I of Tooro has made a strong appeal to parents and guardians, urging them to embrace the measles-rubella vaccination for their children. Speaking at the launch of the vaccination campaign at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City, the King stressed that safeguarding children’s health is fundamental to the prosperity of both the Tooro Kingdom and Uganda as a whole.
This initiative was particularly significant as it marked King Nyabongo I’s first public appearance involving direct participation in a health campaign since his recent enthronement. He personally administered vaccines to several children, demonstrating his commitment to public health.
The campaign targets children aged nine months to under five years. Fort Portal City Health Officer Dr. Emma Mugisa explained that even children who have previously received the vaccine are encouraged to get an additional dose to bolster their immunity. The vaccination is provided free of charge.
Dr. Mugisa highlighted the persistent threat of measles, noting that in 2025, 68 districts experienced outbreaks, with 28 confirmed cases by the campaign’s launch. Over 10,000 measles cases and 60 deaths were recorded in 2025, underscoring the urgent need for increased vaccination efforts.
In Fort Portal, over 90 health workers have been trained to administer the vaccine through various outreach points. The Resident City Commissioner, Asumin Nasike, warned health workers against charging for the free vaccination and assured parents that the government fully funds the program.
Measles and rubella are highly contagious viral diseases that can lead to severe complications, including pneumonia, blindness, and even death, especially in young children. The National Drug Authority (NDA) has also pledged continued partnership with the Tooro Kingdom on various public health initiatives.
