Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) is intensifying efforts to bring order to the city’s bustling trade environment. A recent meeting with leaders of major trader associations at Kitante Primary School focused on critical issues including trade order, market space allocation, street vending, waste management, and overall public safety.
KCCA Executive Director, Sharifah Buzeki, made a strong appeal to traders currently operating on streets and in unauthorized locations. She highlighted that there are over 550 vacant trading spaces across several public markets, including Wandegeya, Usafi, and Luzira. Buzeki encouraged traders to utilize these existing facilities before exploring new ones, assuring that KCCA would address further needs as new market spaces are developed.
During the engagement, Kampala Lord Mayor Ronald Nsubuga Balimwezo urged traders to remain united, adhere to the law, and foster stronger dialogue with KCCA to resolve challenges affecting their businesses.
Traders’ representatives acknowledged KCCA’s progress in infrastructure, citing improvements in road networks and public health initiatives like the Weyonje campaign and drainage works. However, they also proposed the introduction of Sunday markets to create additional trading opportunities, particularly for those operating informally.
KCCA officials also addressed waste management responsibilities, emphasizing that maintaining a clean city is a collective effort. Traders were reminded that while paying licenses is necessary, it does not absolve them of their duty to manage waste effectively. Concerns were also raised regarding merchandise displayed in walkways and doorways, which pose safety risks and obstruct movement.
KCCA continues these consultations with the business community to enhance trade order and public services throughout Kampala. This initiative aims to create a more organized and functional trading ecosystem for all stakeholders.
