The National Club Championship, the first major volleyball silverware of the season, is set to commence this weekend at Uganda Christian University (UCU) in Mukono. The stakes are high, as the winning teams will earn Uganda’s coveted ticket to the African Club Championship.

Last year, KCCA achieved a remarkable double, clinching both the men’s and women’s titles in Gulu. This year, the men’s team, led by Alex Mugoda, enters as the defending champion and with a recent UCU Open title win. Despite the departure of key player Muhammad Iga to Rwanda, KCCA will rely on Carlos Omua and Esau Ecil for offensive firepower. Their path to victory last year was dramatic, involving a dramatic comeback against Nemostars before a decisive 3-0 sweep in the final. Nemostars, UCU Doves, and Sport-S are expected to be their strongest challengers.

The KCCA women’s team also seeks to replicate their previous dominance. They went through last year’s tournament undefeated, a feat that preceded their National League title win and subsequent representation at the African Championship in Cairo. However, they recently lost the NSSF KAVC International final to Kenya Prisons, and have seen Moreen Mwamula and Faith Magole depart. The team hopes new recruit Hadijah Otin’s experience will bolster their efforts. Rival clubs like KCB-Nkumba, Vision Volleyball Camp, and Sport-S Ladies are poised to challenge their reign, making the women’s competition a major highlight.

The ultimate prize for both champions extends beyond domestic bragging rights, offering a prestigious opportunity to compete on the continental stage against Africa’s elite volleyball clubs. The pursuit of this continental prize significantly elevates the intensity and importance of the National Club Championship.
